Hannah, like the other honors students with whom I spoke, presented deep inconsistencies between the structure of classes, knowledge, and her peers within the Honors Program and those within the larger campus. Consumption and dissemination of knowledge then becomes differentiated within the same campus. Though this research was not designed to locate honors students as intentional participants or with an eye toward tracking, I inadvertently interviewed three honors students (including Hannah). Consistencies among these three students, all of whom were art history majors, Caucasian, female, and ostensibly middle class, captures a small piece of evidence of tracking within McKinley College. It seems Oakes is right to suggest that most schools are “still keeping track,” but it also seems that this trend is finally moving into the realm of higher education.
